Search goal: Identify Roger’s paternal grandfather

Roger contacted me earlier this year for help finding the identity of his paternal grandfather. Roger’s father wasn’t an adoptee, but there was a 105 year old family mystery of who his father was. Roger knew it was likely between the two husbands of his grandmother, and due to some overlapping timelines, he wasn’t sure which husband it was.

Roger had tested at MyHeritage, but there wasn’t enough matches on there for me to find a common family name. Both men had very recent Scottish heritage as well, and though MyHeritage tends to have more European testers, there weren’t many matches. I encouraged Roger to test with AncestryDNA, as we knew he had some relatives that had tested there (they could have uploaded to MyHeritage to compare DNA results, but Roger was interested with testing with Ancestry anyways).

Time went by and eventually Roger’s AncestryDNA results came back, and he had plenty of close paternal matches which helped us see quickly who Roger’s paternal grandfather was. Roger had a full first cousin once removed match, and a half first cousin match. The full first cousin once removed was a descendent of Roger’s grandmother’s second husband, so we knew Roger’s grandfather was indeed the second husband. Roger is glad to have solved his century old family mystery!
