Search goal: Identify Kal’s biological father.

Kal reached out for some assistance with identifying his biological father. He had done an AncestryDNA test and discovered that he had an NPE- his father that raised him was not his biological father.

Kal had already done a lot of research and narrowed his biological father down to a set of siblings. But he wasn’t 100% sure which man from the sibling set was his biological father. In addition, he also had a new match that he wasn’t sure where she fit in.

Kal added me to his AncestryDNA results as a collaborator and I took a look at his paternal matches. I checked over the research he had done and agreed he was correct in identifying the sibling set that his biological father was from. There were only three brothers, so I was hopeful we would be able to narrow it down some more.

I took a look at the three brothers: Carl, James, and Gerald. Carl had a grandchild that had done DNA test and was matching Kal in the right range to be to be a first cousin once removed. So we were able to eliminate Carl as a possible biological father.

James did not have any descendants that had tested yet with AncestryDNA.

I took a look at the new match to Kal, a lady named Trysha was now his top paternal match. Trysha was matching him in the first cousin/half niece centimorgan range. I took a look at her tree, which was thankfully nicely filled out, and I could see that her grandfather was Gerald.

Trysha was of course much matching Kal too high to be a first cousin once removed, which meant that she had to be a half niece to Kal. This helped confirm that Gerald was Kal’s biological father.

I shared my findings with Kal, who was very happy to have finally confirmed the identity of his biological father.
